Bosnia And Herzegovina's Energy Structure Faces Challenges

Data from the Statistics Bureau of Bosnia and Herzegovina shows that electricity imports reached 628.9 million marks in 2025, more than double the 312.6 million marks of the previous year, a net increase of approximately 316 million marks. Meanwhile, electricity exports, while increasing to 868.8 million marks, remained below the previous level of over 1 billion marks.

Energy experts point out that insufficient domestic coal supply, the impact of weather on hydropower, and declining combined heat and power (CHP) capacity are the main reasons for the surge in imports. Since last year, both Bosnia and Herzegovina's entities have raised electricity prices multiple times. The Federal Region implemented tiered pricing for electricity in September of last year, and Republika Srpska recently announced a 10% increase in residential electricity prices and a 6% increase in industrial electricity prices next February.

Former head of the Bosnian power company, Jerlajć, stated that while natural factors such as insufficient hydropower are difficult to control, the management issues in the CHP production process urgently need to be addressed.
