Chile's La Silva reported on September 4th that two major green hydrogen projects were introduced in Chile's Magallanes Region over the past year.
One project, owned by the HNH Energy consortium, comprised of Austrian companies AustriaEnergy, Ökowing, and Denmark's Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, is expected to invest $11 billion to produce and export green ammonia. The project consists of two phases, with the first phase expected to begin construction in 2028 and install 1.4 GW of wind power and a 1 GW electrolyzer, producing 580,000 tons of green ammonia annually. The project began its environmental impact assessment (EIA) in July 2024 and will submit its first supplementary EIA materials this week.
The other project, owned by Total Energy, began its EIA in May of this year and, at $16 billion, set a record for the largest investment project in the history of Chile's EIA system. It will also produce and export green ammonia. The project manager stated that the company's current strategic focus in Chile is entirely on this project, and that it is currently preparing its supplementary EIA materials.
