Samoa Declares State Of Emergency Over Severe Power Crisis

Suva, March 31 (Chinanews.com) Apia: Samoan Prime Minister Fiame announced in Apia, the capital, on March 31 that the country will enter a 30-day national state of emergency due to a serious power crisis on Upolu, the main island of Samoa.

According to local media reports, Fiame announced the above state of emergency at a press conference held on the same day. She said that the government will take emergency measures to stabilize the power supply and strive to eliminate the adverse effects caused by power shortages.

Fiame said that specific measures to deal with the crisis include canceling taxes on relevant power equipment and mobilizing more resources to support affected households and businesses. She said that the government will ensure that temporary power generation equipment is put into operation before the end of April, and the formal power generation equipment is expected to be in place in August.

It is reported that the power supply crisis was caused by severe damage to the national transmission lines and failure of backup power generation equipment due to severe weather in Samoa. Due to the sharp reduction in power generation, Upolu, where the capital is located, has been implementing power restrictions since February, seriously affecting the lives of local residents and the operation of enterprises.
