Heatwave And Drought Exacerbate Iran's Water And Power Supply Crisis

According to foreign media reports, the Iranian government ordered the suspension of government offices and public institutions in 16 of its 31 provinces on the 6th to reduce power consumption during an extreme heat wave.

The Iranian Meteorological Department predicts that the extreme weather will persist for at least five days across much of the country, with temperatures reaching 50°C in some areas.

According to the Tehran Provincial Water Supply and Sewage Company, the heat wave is also accompanied by drought, with the capital Tehran experiencing its lowest rainfall in 60 years, severely impacting the city's water resources.

According to Iranian media reports, Iranian President Pezhekhiyan recently warned against excessive water consumption, saying it could lead to severe water shortages in the Iranian capital in September.

Pezhekhiyan warned, "In Tehran, if we fail to control water use and people don't cooperate, there will be no water in the dams by September or October."
