COP30 Announces Establishment Of A Committee To Address Climate Change

The President of the 30th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30) recently announced the establishment of a special committee on climate adaptation, aimed at discussing climate change response strategies with various sectors of society and local governments.

Attending an Insper think tank event in São Paulo via video link, Andrés Correa do Lago emphasized that climate adaptation will be a core agenda item at COP30, to be held in Belém, the capital of Pará State, in November. "This committee brings together leading experts in sustainable development in South America and will help us build a platform for dialogue between government and the public sector."

The committee's impressive lineup includes ICLEI South America Executive Secretary Jusala Carvalho, Peruvian climatologist José Marengo, Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization Executive Director Vanessa Graziotín, and former Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf.

Andrés Correa do Lago revealed, "We will establish 100 globally applicable climate adaptation indicators to provide a scientific basis for national action. After the Belém Conference, the 196 Parties will, for the first time, have a unified action roadmap that clearly defines climate adaptation priorities."

Regarding concerns about conference accommodations, Andrés Correa do Lago clarified, "The Brazilian government is taking effective measures to regulate hotel prices in Belém to ensure that all delegations can attend the conference. If some countries are absent due to accommodation costs, it will directly undermine the legitimacy of the negotiation results."
