During the 15th General Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week Summit, Egypt's Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Esmat, met with a delegation from AMEA Power, led by Chairman Hussain Al Nowais. Discussions focused on increasing AMEA Power's investments in renewable energy, energy storage solutions using battery technology, and advancing Egypt's energy strategy, which emphasizes private sector participation in renewable energy and diversification of electricity sources.
The talks highlighted the parties' ongoing collaborative efforts, including the latest progress on the 300 MWh battery storage system at the Abydos 1 project in Aswan, which has a capacity of 500 MW and was commissioned last month. The parties also reviewed progress on the 500 MW wind energy project in the Gulf of Suez, which is expected to connect new capacity to the national grid in early summer.
Further discussions focused on plans to add up to 1,500 MW of capacity through stand-alone battery storage systems, with a focus on accelerating progress on the project as it plays a key role in stabilizing the national grid and optimizing the benefits of renewable energy.
The meeting also discussed the latest progress of the Abydos 2 solar project, which has a capacity of 1,000 MW and is also equipped with a 600 MWh battery storage system, as well as other projects in Egypt's electricity sector in cooperation with Al Nowais Group.
Minister Esmat stressed the important role of the private sector in achieving the national energy strategy, expanding the use of renewable energy and leveraging Egypt's natural resources, especially in the renewable energy sector. He reiterated the government's goal to increase the share of renewable energy in the energy mix to more than 42% by 2030 and to 65% by 2040.
Esmat also emphasized the power sector's commitment to promoting renewable energy, reducing carbon emissions and diversifying energy production sources. He praised AMEA Power for adhering to the project timeline and noted their contribution to accelerating the addition of new capacity to the national grid.
