Thailand's Ministry Of Energy Promotes The Preparation Of A New Version Of The National Power Development Plan

According to Thai media reports, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, Ms. Sasikan, recently revealed that the Thai government, led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Piraphan, is preparing to establish a "New National Power Development Plan (PDP) Committee" to develop an energy plan that aligns with economic and technological trends and future energy needs, specifically encouraging public participation and promoting renewable energy development.

The spokesperson emphasized that the new PDP must be transparent, independent, and draw on broad input from all parties. A public consultation on the draft PDP, launched in June 2024, collected numerous suggestions, including the appropriate proportion of renewable energy, grid infrastructure preparation, the impact of economic growth on electricity demand, and the urgency of introducing new energy technologies (such as small modular reactors (SMRs)).

The new PDP will focus on the following core objectives: ensuring genuine access to clean energy; achieving a fair electricity system at reasonable prices; and encouraging community participation in power generation to enhance local economic and energy independence.

In addition, Minister Piraphan informed Parliament on July 31, 2025, that the government will vigorously promote the use of solar energy and agricultural waste for power generation to reduce energy costs and increase rural incomes. The government also plans to promote small community power plant projects so that people can truly become part of the national energy system.
