Thailand Tenders 280 MW Of AC Floating Solar Projects

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) recently officially launched the tender for the 280 megawatt alternating current (MWac) Srinagarin Dam floating solar project. As a key component of EGAT's clean energy development strategy, the project will further promote Thailand's renewable energy industry and contribute to its long-term energy transition goals.

According to Thidade Eiamsai, Deputy Governor of Power Plant Development and Renewable Energy at EGAT, the floating solar project is located at the Srinagarin Dam in Kanchanaburi Province and is scheduled to enter commercial operation in 2028. The project's core operating model involves deploying floating solar panels within the dam's reservoir to generate electricity. The project innovatively shares key infrastructure and equipment with the dam's existing hydropower station. This design significantly reduces initial construction and ongoing operations and maintenance costs, ultimately achieving reasonable electricity cost control and enhancing the project's economic viability and market competitiveness.

Notably, this floating solar power plant is not an isolated project, but rather a key component of the revised version of Thailand's Electricity Development Plan 2018-2037. According to the plan, EGAT will continue to promote the development of floating solar projects in its dams and reservoirs across the country, with the goal of achieving a total power generation capacity of 2,725 megawatts of such projects by 2037. By synergizing water and solar resources, it will build a multi-energy complementary clean energy system, providing strong support for optimizing Thailand's energy structure and achieving its "dual carbon" related goals.
