Vietnam News Agency (VNA) recently reported that Vietnam will begin selling biofuel gasoline E5 RON 92 and E10 RON 95 (ethanol content 5% and 10% respectively) nationwide starting June 1, 2026. This is a significant step taken by the government and ministries after years of preparation, proceeding according to the established roadmap.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade stated that the legal framework, technical infrastructure, and business consensus surrounding this transition are largely in place, ensuring a stable, safe, and efficient market operation and promoting Vietnam's commitments to environmental protection, climate change mitigation, and national energy security.
While implementing the roadmap, ministries will continue to improve standards and technical specifications related to petroleum product operations, strengthen inspection and supervision, and maintain market order and protect consumer rights. The Ministry of Industry and Trade will further refine new decrees related to petroleum product operations and penalties, establishing a more unified and comprehensive legal framework for the transition phase.
Assessments indicate that the use of biofuel gasoline will bring significant environmental benefits. It is estimated that reducing gasoline consumption by more than 1 million tons can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 2.5 million tons. At the same time, developing biofuels can also help boost domestic production, create jobs, and make a positive contribution to economic and social growth.
