Malaysia Will Join The Outer Space Treaty

The Malaysian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation announced on the 26th that the country's cabinet meeting held on the 25th approved Malaysia's accession to the United Nations Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies, or the Outer Space Treaty.

China News Service quoted Bernama as reporting that Malaysia will also join the Convention on Registration of Objects Launched into Outer Space.

In recent years, Malaysia has actively developed its aerospace industry. The Malaysian Space Agency previously stated that it hopes to build the country's and Southeast Asia's first space launch site as early as 2029.

Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Zheng Likang said that joining the above treaty reflects Malaysia's commitment to the peaceful and responsible use of outer space, which is conducive to Malaysia's active participation in international cooperation in the use of outer space and promoting the further development of the country's aerospace industry.

The Outer Space Treaty came into force in 1967. The treaty was formulated under the auspices of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and is the first international treaty to stipulate legal principles for outer space activities.
