Vietnam Encourages The Development Of Waste-to-energy And Lake-surface Photovoltaic Power Generation

According to Vietnam Express, the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Vietnam recently stated at a meeting on the implementation of the 8th Electricity Plan and the adjustment of the 8th Electricity Plan that it supports local investment in the construction of waste-to-energy plants and gives priority to including lake photovoltaic power generation projects in the plan.

Officials from the Electricity and Renewable Energy Bureau of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Vietnam said that the scale of waste-to-energy power generation in the 8th Electricity Plan is only 2,200 megawatts, and the capacity allocated to various places is limited. Currently, Vietnam's operating waste-to-energy plants include the Soc Son Waste-to-Energy Plant in Hanoi, which processes 4,000 tons of garbage per day and has a power generation capacity of 75 megawatts; the Vinh Tan Waste-to-Energy Plant in Binh Thuan Province, which processes 600 tons of garbage per day and has a power generation capacity of 30 megawatts; the Phu Ninh Waste-to-Energy Plant in Phu Tho Province, which processes 500 tons of garbage per day and has a power generation capacity of 25 megawatts; and the Cu Chi Waste-to-Energy Plant in Ho Chi Minh City, which processes 1,000 tons of garbage per day and has a power generation capacity of 50 megawatts. The updated list of renewable energy projects by the ministry will supplement the 34 waste-to-energy projects with a total power of 621.1 megawatts proposed by various places.

Regarding solar power generation projects, Nguyen Hoang Long, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade of Vietnam, said that if there are lake-surface solar power stations in various places, especially lake-surface solar power projects of hydropower stations with grid connection lines, they will be given priority in the planning.

According to reports, the Prime Minister of the Vietnamese government approved Vietnam's eighth power plan in May 2023 and approved the implementation plan of the above plan in April 2024. The Ministry of Industry and Trade of Vietnam plans to submit the adjustment of the eighth power plan for approval on February 28, 2025.
