The 15th ASEAN Nuclear Energy Cooperation Sub-sector Network (NEC-SSN) was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from April 28 to 30, VNA reported on May 3, to discuss the prospects of ASEAN using nuclear energy as a clean and stable power source to replace fossil fuel power generation to support the energy transformation agenda in the region.
The meeting was jointly organized by the Ministry of Energy Transformation and Water (PETRA) of Malaysia and the ASEAN Center for Energy (ACE), hosted by the Philippines, and attended by representatives of ASEAN member states such as Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore and Malaysia in offline and online forms, and Timor-Leste attended the meeting as an observer.
PETRA issued an announcement on May 1 that the main agenda of the NEC-SSN meeting was to formulate the key areas of the ASEAN Nuclear Energy Strategy and Action Plan, evaluate the list of potential activities that can be implemented in the field of civil nuclear energy, submit it to the ASEAN Senior Officials' Meeting on Energy (SOME) held in June 2025 for review, and implement it in the field of civil nuclear energy (CNE) in the ASEAN Action Plan for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) 2026-2030.
Discussions were also held within the NEC-SSN framework between ASEAN and its dialogue partners and international organizations, including the Korea Nuclear Energy Association, the ASEAN Business Council, the Integrated Support Center for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Nuclear Safety, the Japan Atomic Energy Agency and the Center for Global Nuclear Energy Partnership, to discuss ways to assist ASEAN in developing a regional nuclear energy industry and find long-term solutions to energy challenges.
